Hoarder House Cleaning: Day One Starts with a Phone Call

Sep 15, 2026

Day One doesn’t start when we arrive at your property.
It starts when you pick up the phone.
For some people, making that call can be the hardest part of the whole process.
You may have been putting it off for months or even years.
You might be embarrassed about the condition of your home.
You might be worried about what we’ll think.
You might be frightened that we’ll judge you, tell you what you should have done differently, or simply walk away.
Please don’t worry about that.
We’ve seen many different situations over the years, and we know that there is always a person and a story behind the property.
Sometimes life gets difficult.
Sometimes one thing leads to another.
Sometimes grief, illness, loss, trauma, depression, anxiety or other circumstances can make things harder until, eventually, the home becomes something that feels impossible to deal with.
And when that happens, asking for help isn’t failure.
It’s often the first step towards getting your life and your home back.

So, What Happens When You First Contact Us?

Honestly?
We talk.
That’s it.
You don’t need to have everything worked out before you call us.
You don’t need to clean up first.
You don’t need to apologise.
And you certainly don’t need to feel ashamed.
We’ll ask you some questions so we can understand what you’re dealing with and what kind of help you need.
We may ask about the condition of the property, whether there are any immediate safety concerns and whether there are things we need to be aware of before visiting.
That could include sharps, waste, pests, mould, strong odours or areas that are difficult to access.
It’s not an interrogation.
It’s simply about understanding the situation so we can help you properly and safely.

The First Visit

Once we’ve spoken, we’ll arrange a visit to assess the property where appropriate.
This isn’t about standing in the doorway looking shocked.
It’s about understanding what needs to be done.
We’ll look at the property, talk through your concerns and start working out the best way forward.
Every hoarding situation is different.
There isn’t a magic number of hours, a standard size of skip or a one size fits all cleaning package.
We look at the property, the circumstances and, importantly, the person.

You Don’t Have to Let Go of Everything

One of the biggest fears people have is that a hoarding clearance means someone is going to come in and throw everything away.
That’s not how we approach it.
Where sorting is required, we work with you.
Not against you.
We’ll help you work through belongings and decide what you want to:
• Keep
• Donate
• Recycle
• Dispose of
And sometimes those decisions take time.
That’s okay.
Something that might look insignificant to somebody else could hold enormous sentimental value to you.
We understand that.

What If I Get Overwhelmed?

You probably will at some point.
And that’s okay too.
This isn’t just a physical clean.
It can be an incredibly emotional process.
You might find something that brings back memories.
You might suddenly realise just how much has built up.
You might have a day where you simply can’t face it.
We don’t see that as failure.
We understand that progress isn’t always a straight line.
Sometimes you need to stop.
Sometimes you need a cup of tea.
Sometimes you need someone to reassure you that you’re doing okay.
We’ll work with you and at a pace that is manageable.

When Does the Cleaning Actually Start?

Once we’ve made enough space to work safely and the sorting and clearance have progressed, we can start the deep cleaning.
Depending on the property, this could involve:
• Deep cleaning
• Sanitising
• Odour treatment
• Cleaning areas that haven’t been accessible for some time
• Kitchen and bathroom cleaning
• Floor cleaning
• Specialist cleaning where contamination is present
• Mould treatment where appropriate
Sometimes the cleaning itself is the easier part.
Getting to the point where we can clean can be the biggest hurdle.
That’s why we don’t rush the process.

How Long Does Hoarder House Cleaning Take?

There isn’t a simple answer.
Some properties can be cleared and cleaned within a few days.
Others take much longer.
The amount of belongings, the condition of the property, access, waste removal, specialist cleaning requirements and how the person is coping can all affect the timescale.
We’d rather take the time needed to do the job properly than rush you through something that is already difficult.

The Most Important Thing About Day One

Day One isn’t the day we arrive with the van.
Day One is the day you decide that you don’t have to deal with this on your own anymore.
It might be the day you pick up the phone with your heart in your mouth.
It might be the day you finally send that email.
It might be the day you tell someone, “I need help.”
That’s Day One.
And from there, we’ll take it one step at a time.
